“And, I think, Camilla, Queen Camilla, has certainly earned the respect that she’s receiving. Prince William also took time off to support his wife, though he is now back at work. Camilla has helped pick up the slack, demonstrating the importance of her rehabilitation to Charles and the royal family. But the public mood has softened since Charles married the woman then known as Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005. The silver crown is set with diamonds. Rubies, sapphires, emeralds and seed pearls are peppered through the design. And the red velvet cap inside would be fit to cushion the head of a monarch. Scrutiny of Britain’s royal family was supercharged this past week by the announcement of King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis, which followed the hospitalization of Catherine, Princess of Wales, in January. But while the modern monarchy finds itself under a sometimes unwelcome microscope, the dolls’ house has for a century allowed visitors to peer inside the rooms of a palace — albeit at a tiny scale.

A royal source told CNN that the form of cancer detected was not prostate cancer, but did not specify further. LONDON (AP) — King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis heaps more pressure on the British monarchy, which is still evolving after the 70-year reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II. CNN —A new official portrait of King Charles III that will hang in public buildings in the United Kingdom has been unveiled. Public bodies such as courts, schools and councils can request free oak-framed copies of the portrait, which was taken by photographer Hugo Burnand. British photographer Burnand has long held close ties to the royal family, taking official pictures at Charles and Queen Camilla’s coronation. He also took the official photos for both Charles and Camilla’s wedding in 2005, and William and Catherine’s wedding in 2011. “Official portraits of Queen Elizabeth II are currently on display in many public institutions, and the offering of the new official portrait of King Charles III will enable organisations across the UK to carry on that tradition,” the UK Cabinet Office said in a press statement last year.

CNN —For many in Denmark, Queen Margrethe II is the only monarch they’ve ever known. But on Sunday, a new era will get underway when she hands over to her son, Crown Prince Frederik. This means that she will be able to perform duties as head of state when both King Frederik or Crown Prince Christian are not able, such as if they were overseas. King Frederik X will rule alongside his Australian-born and hugely popular wife, Queen Mary – which will undoubtedly delight her proud admirers back home. “The story of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is one Australians have followed closely and hold dear to their hearts,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

The devil appears to some people as Lucifer the light-bringer, yes — but his darker visage finds worshipers as well. Ours is no longer the world in which Tolkien grew up, nor even the one in which he spent his last years. Tolkien himself was very careful to note that the Shire is not self-sustaining, dependent as it is on outsiders for security. I obviously endorse this point, but I think the last line undersells how much Tolkien subjected his own pastoral nostalgia to critique. Because Tolkien is a reactionary, the solution to that sickness is the return of a king of ancient lineage.

London CNN —It will be a bittersweet day for Britain’s royal family Friday as they mark not only the first year of King Charles III’s reign but the one-year anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s death. Charles is currently in Balmoral – the beloved royal property in Aberdeenshire where his mother retreated annually for a summer break. The Prince and Princess of Wales viewed the floral tributes to the Queen at Sandringham, September 15, 2022. The pair will then meet people from the local community – some of whom previously met Queen Elizabeth II during various visits to the city. For several royal experts, the King has used the past 12 months to blend the two reigns and strengthen the monarchy.

Thailand Gets Ready to Sparkle

Thailand’s history is rich with gemstones, beginning in the 1400s when its mines first produced the sapphires and rubies that adorned the crowns, swords and even the footwear of the country’s royalty. And as recently as May, jewelry fans took note of the glittering sapphire and diamond necklace and earring set that Queen Suthida of Thailand wore at King Charles III’s coronation in London. But since the 1970s, Thailand has mostly been known as a global hub for cutting, polishing, heating and trading stones, doing business with its gem-rich neighbors Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, along with countries far beyond. The event offers “a lot of opportunities for local businesses to be exposed to overseas buyers,” said Sumed Prasongpongchai, chief executive of the Gem & Jewelry Institute of Thailand (G.I.T. “We promote the fair heavily in the Middle East, Europe and America.”

Does British tourism really need the royal family?

CNN —Love them or loathe them, the royal family are up there with red telephone boxes and scones when it comes to images of Britishness. The royal family does bring tourism to the UK. But if the royal family were to disappear, would the UK’s tourism industry suddenly implode? And while the international perception of Britain is certainly intertwined with the royal family, this does not tell us whether a reigning royal family is necessary for tourism. After all, the history surrounding the monarchy and places associated with them would still be here even if the royal family was not.
A satirical headline saying British actor Adjoa Andoh is appalled at the singular ethnicity of the Japanese royal family has been taken seriously online. The screenshot of a fabricated headline attributed to The Guardian was shared following Andoh’s May 6 comments about the lack of diversity on display upon the Buckingham Palace balcony at King Charles III’s coronation. However, the earliest version of the fabricated screenshot online was posted by a satirical account on Twitter (here), which states in its bio that it posts “spicy satire”. It is totally fake” and referred to a statement by Andoh explaining the context of her original remark. The fabricated headline originates from a satirical Twitter account.
London CNN —London’s Metropolitan Police Service has expressed “regret” over the arrests of anti-monarchy activists on Saturday, the day of King Charles III’s coronation. Police arrested 64 people on coronation day. Among those were six anti-monarchy protesters, who have since been released and will face no further action, police said. Republic also said it spent months working with police liaison officers and meeting senior commanders in order to be able to protest during the coronation. Police said it was “not clear” at the time of the arrest that Smith was engaging with the protest liaison team and that the liaison team was not present during the arrests.
CNN —Prince Louis, the youngest child of the Prince and Princess of Wales, has undertaken his first royal engagement at the age of five. The Wales family joined the scouts to renovate their scout hut. Prince George, nine, and Princess Charlotte, eight, were seen painting a porch. Prince Louis, dressed in blue shorts and a blue polo shirt, joined his father on a digger and helped fill a wheelbarrow with sand. Prince Louis pushed a loaded wheelbarrow while his mother and sister -- the Princess of Wales and Princess Charlotte -- watched on.
LONDON— Prince Harry sat several rows back in Westminster Abbey on Saturday watching as his older brother, Prince William , knelt and pledged loyalty before his father, King Charles III . The moment, halfway through the king’s coronation, was a striking image of a family disunited and a reminder of the differing paths the two royal brothers have taken in the last three years.

Photo: Cover Images/Zuma PressLONDON—King Charles III’s coronation this weekend got rave reviews from the British press, part of what appears to be a fragile truce between the notoriously aggressive U.K. media and the new king, after a long and sometimes frosty relationship. The former Prince of Wales has had a famously fraught time with the British press, especially when he had an affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles, now his wife and queen, while married to Diana, princess of Wales. He was also mocked for years over everything from his ears to his penchant for talking to plants.
Who Pays for King Charles III? The Answer Is Changing

Details of King Charles III’s personal wealth are a closely held secret. WSJ breaks down what is known about the monarch’s assets, his income streams and what he inherited from Queen Elizabeth II. Photo: Hannah McKay/AFPThe funding of the British monarchy, never clean, is getting messier. The transfer of ceremonial power from the late Queen Elizabeth II to her son, King Charles III , reached a climax with Saturday’s coronation in London. Behind the scenes, the company that finances the public activities of Britain’s royal family is also undergoing a radical generational change.
LONDON—Millions of people are expected to watch on Saturday as the archbishop of Canterbury places a jewel-encrusted gold crown on King Charles III ’s head to the sound of trumpets and gun salutes in a coronation ceremony that dates back 1,000 years. The event in Westminster Abbey is one Britons haven’t witnessed for 70 years. It is the only coronation ceremony left in Europe, a throwback to a bygone age when all-powerful monarchs dictated the fates of nations. In the U.K., that regal power is now largely ceremonial, but the pomp and history remain.
Setting the theme of the resplendent yet intimate-for-a-royal coronation ceremony, King Charles III’s first remarks at the beginning of the two-hour spectacle in Westminster Abbey were: “I come not to be served, but to serve.”In the crowning moment — literally — Charles was seated on the 700-year-old Coronation Chair, believed to be the oldest piece of furniture in Europe still being used for its original purpose, and holding two golden scepters as the glittering St. Edward’s Crown was placed on his head. It is the only time he will ever wear it. Charles looked particularly solemn as he wore the crown, made for King Charles II in 1661, the moment for which he has waited over seven decades. The echo of Queen Elizabeth II, his late mother, who also held two scepters at the same moment in her 1953 coronation, was profound. In the Abbey, soaring orchestral and choral music followed, while cheers erupted from a crowd gathered in front of Buckingham Palace, as the boom of the gun salute marked King Charles’s crowning.
